Biofilm relationships' stability studied

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- New Zealand scientists say they've determined complex microbial communities can become more stable as their relationship evolves. The researchers said their experiments allowed them to witness the development of species inter-relationships that underpin ecologically complex microbial communities called biofilms. By studying an artificially simple biofilm of just two species, Paul Rainey and colleagues at the University of Auckland found the principle is the same as that underpinning the exponentially more complex biofilms found in the natural world. The scientists studied two bacterial species called Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas putida and found, if given the opportunity to coexist as a biofilm, they could exploit scarcer nutrients than if the two species were simply mixed together in an unstructured way....

DALLAS (AP) - At least six employees of a Dallas halfway house, including a program director and another top manager, have been involved in inappropriate relationships with offenders since 2000, according to state prison records cited by a newspaper. Two of the staffers married the residents they supervised. Other workers ended up living with former residents of the Way Back House, The Dallas Morning News reported in Wednesday editions. All six were fired. But none of the employees, all but one of whom are women, have been prosecuted, according to county records. State law prohibits correctional staff or contract employees from having romantic and sexual liaisons with supervised or in-custody offenders. The Prison Rape Elimination Act, signed into law by President Bush in 2003, created an investigatory commission and established a national zero-tolerance policy for sexual assaults behind bars....

TORONTO, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- If negotiating with a person when buying a used car, it might be worthwhile not to call at home but at the seller's workplace, found a Canadian study. Pankaj Aggarwal and Meng Zhang of the University of Toronto found that simply thinking about a personal relationship causes sellers to set a higher price, even if the relationship is not directly related to the transaction. Imagine selling a used car on eBay, you will demand a higher price for the car if your toddler is sitting on your lap, according to the researchers. The findings are published in the Journal of Consumer Research. ....

Tony Blair has spelled out the importance of Britain's partnership with both America and Europe in a speech earlier this evening. He told guests at the Lord Mayor's Banquet that it would be the "surest route to the destruction of our true national interest" for Britain to give up either relationship, both of which are "precisely suited" to us. The Prime Minister explained: "When people say: yes, but we want a 'British' foreign policy, I say: of course we do, but in today's world a foreign policy based on strong alliances is the only 'British' policy which works." Turning to Iraq, the PM said that the bomb which killed British soldiers last weekend was "a cruel and wicked reminder" that the terrorism there is designed to stop democracy flourishing in the Middle East....

My request for questions about relationships this week had as many submissions as I've gotten for all previous issues combined. We're tacking all sorts of personal problems from long-distance love to young love learning to live together to old love on-the-rocks. I want to thank my friends for sharing their own tips for making relationships survive an MBA, and I've borrowed this advice where applicable. Next week's column will return to answering GSBers oddest issues. If you want to read about a particular subject, then submit a question! I can be reached by email (SSultan@ChicagoGSB.edu) or anonymously by letter in my mail folder. When I was accepted to the GSB, my boyfriend decided to move to Chicago with me. This is the first time that we've lived together, and he's already on my last nerve....
