The researchers said their experiments allowed them to witness the development of species inter-relationships that underpin ecologically complex microbial communities called biofilms. By studying an artificially simple biofilm of just two species, Paul Rainey and colleagues at the University of Auckland found the principle is the same as that underpinning the exponentially more complex biofilms found in the natural world. The scientists studied two bacterial species called Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas putida and found, if given the opportunity to coexist as a biofilm, they could exploit scarcer nutrients than if the two species were simply mixed together in an unstructured way.... | |

Two of the staffers married the residents they supervised. Other workers ended up living with former residents of the Way Back House, The Dallas Morning News reported in Wednesday editions. All six were fired. But none of the employees, all but one of whom are women, have been prosecuted, according to county records. State law prohibits correctional staff or contract employees from having romantic and sexual liaisons with supervised or in-custody offenders. The Prison Rape Elimination Act, signed into law by President Bush in 2003, created an investigatory commission and established a national zero-tolerance policy for sexual assaults behind bars.... | |
